Today VMware announced the next version of its vSphere cloud operating system, a “suite” including a few existing products products and a new storage solution for SMBs. The products are expected to be available in Q3 2011. The announcements follow stepped-up competition from Citrix, which just acquired Cloud.com today .

VMware Announces Slew of New vSphere Features
This morning Citrix announced its acquisition of Cloud.com , a company that sells virtualization infrastructure for building private clouds. Cloud.com brings with it a number of high profile customers such as Bechtel, GoDaddy, Tata Communications and Zynga. The announcement follows Citrix’s announcement of its private cloud infrastructure play called Project Olympus , which is based on OpenStack.

Citrix announced today that the latest beta of XenServer, v6 is now available for a free download . Citrix has made Xen simpler (please, we’re resisting the jokes), trimming down the management infrastructure required to run advanced features such as StorageLink and Site Recovery. Xen’s Workload Balancing feature is also available as a turnkey virtual appliance, making that easier to install and manage.
